Transition Year Trip to Mountjoy Prison
On Wednesday, 10th December, twenty Transition Year students from Ms. Lancaster’s Law class were
afforded the opportunity to visit Mountjoy Prison to gain an insight into the Irish prison system.
The visit began with a walking tour of the outside of the prison buildings and yards where students
were enlightened as to the history of the prison.
Students were then escorted inside to a visiting room where they were presented with information on
various contraband that had been confiscated from prisoners throughout the years and viewed
examples of the aforementioned contraband.
An inmate then spoke to the group about his life and experience in Mountjoy Prison.
This was a truly eye-opening encounter as the students then had the opportunity to pose any
unanswered queries that they had to the inmate.
The visit concluded with a tour of the prison corridors and cells.
