TY UPDATES
#ThinkLanguages
On Wednesday November 19, TYs celebrated their
annual ‘Think Languages’ Day which is a fun Þlled day
where they focus on all the positives of learning
languages and discovering other cultures with our TY
students.
Working in base class groups, students watched the
opening ceremony which introduced them to several
successful young people who attribute their love of
languages to the doors that have opened for them.
The students then took part in an online quiz against
almost 300 other teams from across the country.
They completed an origami workshop which was great fun with wonderful love hearts, butterßies and
frogs fashioned by the students. The day rounded off with a group task where students had to
research and create an introductory video to a language not studied in their school.
Young Social Innovators (YSI)
After much brainstorming, our YSI class chose a project called “Angela In Action,” focused on
promoting the “Ask for Angela” safety campaign, which began in the UK in 2016. The scheme allows
people in customer-facing venues to discreetly ask staff for help if they feel unsafe or vulnerable.
In early December, we welcomed Avril from The Saltee (Annacurra) and Cora from Kenny’s
(Shillelagh). Our project leader Aoibhe presented the initiative, supported by May. Feedback was very
positive, and we look forward to working with them in the coming months. The scheme is suitable for
all customer-facing businesses. We are inviting local and national businesses to participate and plan
to pitch to the YSI Den for funding to localise campaign materials.
